Collaborative Technical Documentation

Speaker: Doug Smith

Doug has created a web app designed to allow engineers to collaboratively create technical documentation, draw diagrams that can interactively change state as procedures are followed, capture link from both diagram symbols and procedure steps. He'll discuss the technology stack he used to make this possible in the course of this presentation:

  • Server stack includes running a Xen slice at Rackspace with Ubuntu Linux, Tomcat, MySQL, JSP
  • Client stack includes Ext/JS framework, CKEditor rich text editor, Raphael Drawing API (dynamically produces VML or SVG), plus lots of Javascript glue code.
  • Ajax calls are used for database fetches and updates. Sessions are run under https from login to logout.
  • 25 tables, 75 programs, about 30 KLOC, slightly over one man year of work. Works on IE6 and up, plus W3C browsers.
  • Interfaced with the dtSearch search engine; we plan to interface with Documentum, LiveLink, Sharepoint, etc, as customers require.

Confessions of a Retired Build Manager

Speaker: Kate Wilczek

Getting a continuious build environment isn't always easy, and making sure everyone uses it correctly is often even more difficult. This talk will help the audience how to get their build environment set up, how to manage it, and how to make sure it's used correctly. This talk will cover:

  1. Our team setup. We are a Maven2 shop and Subversion serves as our version control system
  2. Trunk/branch/tag management, including what can happen when untagged version of software is put into production.
  3. Our typical build process
  4. Hudson integration.

Doug works as an Application Development Manager at Manatee, Inc.
Kate Wilczek works at the Human Genome Sequencing Center as a Scientific Programmer at the Baylor College of Medicine.
Both Kate and Doug are frequent attendees at Houston Java User Group meetings.
